Coffee drinker

One of the biggest issues with dealing with anxiety is that most people are completely unaware that many of the foods and substances they consume are increasing their anxiety levels.

Our lives are busier than ever and when it comes to treating anxiety many of us are left scratching our heads. Let’s look at some simple things that can lead to a spike in anxiety levels and how your can avoid these issues naturally.

One of the biggest contributing factors for high anxiety levels is our diet. Many of us fail to recognise the simply pleasures in life such as our morning and afternoon coffees can lead to huge spikes in anxiety. Caffeine is a drug that will stimulate the central nervous system to give us that early morning boost.

Unfortunately in time we tend to consume more and more caffeine as our tolerance to the drug increases. The issue with caffeine is that people who are overly sensitive to anxiety can see a dramatic spike in anxiousness after consuming caffeine. It can be very subtle with many sufferers failing to recognise that their caffeine intake is leading them to feel uneasy and on edge.

If you are a big coffee drinker or someone who is very sensitive to caffeine it may be time to reduce your intake. Stopping caffeine cold turkey can lead to some nasty withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, fatigue and flu like symptoms. I recommend tapering your intake down instead of going cold turkey.

Many of us like to have a drink now and then. Many of us will drink to “take the edge off” and relax after work or on the weekend. While alcohol can lead to a temporary feeling of peace and relaxation it can quickly snowball to create a vicious cycle of anxiety.

Alcohol can make anxiety levels skyrocket and is something you should look at if you are reaching for a drink instead of trying other techniques to reduce your anxiety and stress levels.

We all know the horrible and nasty effects of smoking but many smokers reach for a cigarette to reduce anxiety and stress. One of the most common excuses and reasons given from smokers who struggle to kick the habit is that having a smoke calms them down and allows them to relax.

The fact is that smoking reduces anxiety and stress temporarily as your body is getting its fix of nicotine. Smokers can have vicious anxiety levels leading to panic attacks and other debilitating conditions. If you are a smoker don’t let the thought of not having a vice to reduce anxiety such as a cigarette stop you from giving up a habit that can have a devastating effect on not only your physical health but your mental health also.

One of the quickest and easiest ways to make your anxiety levels skyrocket is to consume sugary snacks and food. Sugar is a stimulate that can see many of us running around as if we have been injected with an energy boost. Unfortunately this creates an up and down roller coaster ride that will lead to the inevitable “crash”. This feeling can lead to anxiety and high stress levels as your body goes through tremendous hormone changes. Look to cut down sugary snacks and sodas that can be easily consumed but often overseen as a cause to our added stress levels and anxiety.

Another anxiety culprit is going hungry. We all get grumpy and moody when we are hungry but many of us will see our minds racing with some crazy thoughts. These thoughts often lead to feeling on edge and uneasy and can often see our anxiety levels going through the roof. Don’t put off eating even when you are extremely busy, while you may feel that you have no time to eat or that you will eat later, you may quickly regret the effects it will have on you mentally.
